The American Heart Association states: "Sudden cardiac death (also called sudden arrest) is death resulting from an abrupt loss of heart function (cardiac arrest). The victim may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. The time and mode of death are unexpected. It occurs within minutes after symptoms appear. About 325,000 people a year, more then 890 Americans a day die from sudden cardiac arrest". More then 80% of sudden cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital. Most of these victims do not receive bystander CPR.

When CPR is initiated, and an AED is used within 3 minutes, the chance of survival increases up to 75%.
